I am often bored by or cringe at awards acceptance speeches but this measured and quietly passionate piece from Peter Kosminksy at this week’s BAFTAS is well worth watching. Why is it so effective?
Analysis
The choice for the opening is a recent quotation from a Minister about the BBC that he totally disagrees with and he proceeds to indicate that he will “say a few words in defense” of the BBC.
Key message “speak truth to power”, clear, simple language: “it’s your BBC”.
He tells us we should “stand up and fight for it” and then the warning of what we can expect if we do not. Here he paints a bleak picture in his prediction of the future.
The emphatic repetition of “No! No!” is the call to arms.
“It’s time for us to stand up and say ‘no’ to this dangerous nonsense”.
